Visiting speaker - Charlie Booth

hannah-halls

Very relevant to me was a visit from Charlie Booth - an Independant Arts Producer working within the sector I am interested in going into post graduation. What I learned from her:

  • Networking is essential!

  • Admin assistant is an entry level role and recommended as a starting point for getting a foot in the door.

  • Archivists are good to approach for work experience straight after graduating, as they always need manpower.

  • Volunteer at organisations like Tullie House. Fundraising roles are the most in demand.

  • Look at ArtsJobs, run by Arts Council England - THE website for arts jobs in England. The university of Leicester jobs desk is another option, though this is more niche and museum focused.

  • Be prepared to travel for these roles.

  • Volunteering is almost necessary for the first six months post grad, then try not to do unpaid work after that. Make yourself indispensable.

  • a-n is THE arts union.

  • Go to openings to support the industry, it will also get your face recognised.

  • If you're going to cold call galleries, make it specific, eg: 'please will you tear my picture for this project I'm doing?' not 'please can I have an exhibition here?' - be informed of a place before you email them.
